Abstract


We investigated the effects of phellodendri cortex L. on the activity of glucosyltransferase and human gingival cells growth and membrane permeability of Streptococcus mutans JC-2. The water extract of phellodendri cortex l. inhibited the
activity
of
glucosyltransferase which produced by Streptococcus mutans JC-2 and then showed 40.8, 63.3 and 72.1% inhibition rate at 500, 1000 and 2000ppm of concentration, respectively. Cytosolic components of Streptococcus mutans JC-2 were leakaged
significantly
about five times control amoumt by adding 2000ppm of Phellodendri cortex L. because of the injury of plasma mem-brane permeability. The relative activity of human gingival cells showed 83.65, 76.78 and 2.92% at 500, 100 and 200ppm of
concentration,
respectively. The antimicrobial compents of Phellodendri cortex l. were extracted by hexane and ethylether.
